scholars use the terms “strophe” and “stanza” synonymously,9 while others make a distinction between them, the stanza being a larger unit made up of one or more strophes.10 My own inclination is to use the term “strophe” as the larger unit above that of the distich or tristich and not use the term “stanza” at all, since the strophic unit is large enough that we generally need not speak about a still larger unit.
